Tariffs pose threat to global industrial chains, official says

The tariff increases that the United States has placed on Chinese goods affect not only the interests of Chinese companies and consumers, but also their US cou

nterparts and threaten the security of global industrial and supply chains, according to a senior Chinese industrial official.

“We once again urge the US to stop unreasonably suppressing Chin

ese companies. Chinese companies deserve to invest and operate in a fair and just en

vironment in the US and the world,” Vice-Minister of Industry and Information Technology Wang Zhijun said.

Concerning the US decision to further increase tariffs on Chinese imports, Wang s

aid during a recent interview with news media that the total impact is “controllable”.

The nearly $200 billion of Chinese goods hit by additional US tariffs on May 10 acco

unted for 41.8 percent of China’s US exports in 2018, or 8 percent of its total exports.

China’s rural areas have become bright spots in the countr

ry’s e-commerce growth. Rural online retail sales reached 357 billion yuan (51.6 billion US dollars) in

the first three months of this year, up 19.5 percent year on year and faster than the national average growth.

As tours to Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region have become increasingly popular among tourists from home

and abroad, local authorities have announced a plan recently to launch as many as 100 special trains for tourists from May to October.

The local railway authorities will step up cooperation with other parts of the country to boost

Xinjiang’s tourism development, according to Huang Tingfaen, deputy general manager of Xi

njiang Railway Tourism Development Group. The trains will provide easier access to both the southern and northern par

ts of Xinjiang, said Huang. It will also be more convenient for Xinjiang residents to travel to other parts of the country.

Before his retirement, Wang irrigated farmland for de

nd for decades and witnessed local farmers’ continuous battles against sandstorms.

“It didn’t just feel like a black storm, it was as if the whole desert was approachi

ng,” recalls Liu Conghui, a writer who was born, and still lives, near the farm Wang once worked.

As the menacing sandstorms made the area increasingly inhospitable, Liu’s whole community planned to up sticks.

To restore the local ecosystem, the Chinese government launched

a 10.7 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) project in 2001. A set of measures were adopted such as sav

ing water, converting farmland into grassland, providing treatment for dry riverways and building dams. In addition to t

hose measures, industrial and agricultural use of water in cities and counties along the river was limited.

Over the past two decades, Xinjiang has infused 7.7 billion cubic meters of water into

the dry trunk stream of the lower reaches of the Tarim River in 19 rounds of water diversion.

However, the temperature now is about 30 C, much hig

higher than in previous years,” she said. “Also, the rainy season is supposed to

begin after the May Day holiday, but I haven’t seen a drop of rain so far.”

Data from the National Climate Center shows that the average rainfall from April 1 to May 17 is 35.3 millim

eters, down almost two-thirds from the same period last year, the least recorded rainfall over that period since 1961.

In addition to the drought, the average temperature is 1.9 C higher than average for the period, the highest since 1961.

Chen, the chief forecaster, said that according to the mid- to long-term forecast ra

infall will relieve drought in the eastern part of Yunnan province, though its western part will still be plagued by the drought.

Surveillance from the National Climate Center shows that

drought is also occurring in the Inner Mongolia and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous regions, as well

A new United Nations report concludes that high trade tensions

A further escalation of the trade dispute between the US and China threatens both short- and mediu

Ren said the US technologies are still worth learning in both their depth and width. Many small US companies have super-precision products.

“But in our business (5G), Huawei is at the forefront, though when

it comes to comparison between countries, we are still far behind the United States,”Ren added.

“We will not go through an extreme shortage of supplies. We have made sound preparati

the country will basically realize rural and agricultura

By the middle of this century, digital villages will be completely built nationwide to advance rural revitalization.

To fulfill such targets, the country will accelerate the constructi

More efforts will be made to boost the rural digital economy, with wider use of digital techno

While providing more support for rural technological innovation, the co

I cannot believe this could happen during the world cha

championships,” said Guan, also President of the Chinese Taekwondo Federation. “This is the first time I have seen such kind of thing.”

Zheng, who had beaten Walkden three times in a row, took a dominant lead of 20-10 in the closin

g stages of the women’s over 73km category final, but the referee disqualified Zheng alleging she had committed 10 fouls during the bout.

Wakden then secured her third successive world taekwondo title by the referee’s punitive declaration.

“Our athlete has worked very hard for this gold medal and it was taken away so easily by the referee. This is very dirty.”

Guan said that the Chinese team will launch an appeal to the World Taekw

ondo, the sport’s world governing body, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“We will definitely appeal to the decision,” he said. “And this refe

ree’s qualification should be stripped of. This scandal is a serious damage to our sport.”
